Wheatgrass and its healthy properties were discovered in the 1930s by the US chemist Charles Schnabel. His discovery and claims about the health benefits of the product inspired a continuous research. Wheatgrass is one of the most nutritionally rich foods in comparison to other vegetables and contains many important vitamins.
What is wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is a plant, Triticum Aeastivum, that grows throughout Europe and United States. This plant can be grown both indoors and outdoors. Wheatgrass is truly rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It contains vitamins A, E, C, K, and B6, as well as calcium, selenium, magnesium and iron. Just 30 ml of wheatgrass contains as many nutrients as 1kg of other vegetables, like spinach and broccoli. Wheatgrass is also rich in protein and contains many amino acids that are necessary for building protein.

Wheatgrass and blood production
Wheatgrass is rich in chlorophyll, a chemical substance which is similar to hemoglobin. Wheatgrass juice contains as much as 70% of chlorophyll and it takes part in the building of red blood cells. In 2004, a study of 32 patients suffering from the blood disorder thalassemia showed that taking 100 ml of wheatgrass juice for three years helped half of the patients to reduce the necessity of blood transfusions. There is not much scientific evidence to prove that wheatgrass really helps improve the number of red blood cells, however, the fans of this product claim to feel much better and rejuvenated after using it.
In 2002, a small study was carried out in patients suffering from ulcerative colitis. The study showed that taking 100 ml of wheatgrass juice every day for a month improved the symptoms of the disease. The evidence, however, is not conclusive, since the study only involved 21 persons. Still, there is a reason to believe that wheatgrass could be a food to help to reduce the symptoms, and more research has to be carried out.
Other benefits of wheatgrass
Wheatgrass is often taken by people who undergo chemotherapy. This product is believed to work to rejuvenate and detoxify the body. A study of 60 women who underwent chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer found that wheatgrass helped to reduce the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy. However, there is no evidence that wheatgrass can in any way affect tumor growth reduction.

Fans of wheatgrass claim that it is an excellent product for detoxifying the body. The high concentration of chlorophyll in this product is believed to be the main reason for its healthy properties. It has been claimed that wheatgrass helps to oxygenate body’s tissues, detoxifies the liver and helps to reduce aging process. Wheatgrass is also used to reduce symptoms of several skin conditions.
Is there any harm in using wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is considered to be a completely safe food. Although there is a lack of scientific evidence for its benefits, this product still contains a lot of minerals and vitamins that are good for your body. However, taking too many doses can cause several side effects, like headaches, nausea or allergic reactions. Raw wheatgrass can also possibly contain bacteria from the soil.
